Natallee Mae is a photographer in SLC, UT who specializes in newborn, child, and family photography. Her work is absolutely stunning. She’s loved taking pictures since her parents got her a little pink camera when she was in 4th grade. We have been honored to have her photograph a few Taylor Joelle items too.

Natallee answered a few questions for us about her photography, tips for our readers and more!

How long have you been a photographer?

I have been doing photography my whole life, as a hobby. I have always enjoyed it, even as a child. However, I officially started my business the summer of 2011. So I am in the middle of my 4th summer with Little Mae Photography. 

Where are you located?

I am in Salt Lake City, UT

What is your favorite type of subject to photograph?

I love kids! I love capturing kids in the phase of life they are currently in. It is the best! 

Do you have any advice for parents dressing their child (children) for a photo shoot?

The biggest piece of advice I can give is, stay neutral and classy.  Don’t be afraid to spend a little money on nice clothes for your photo shoot. Pictures by a professional photographer are something that you can have on your wall as a piece of art, your whole life. Clothes are a huge part of making the art piece of come to life. 

How do you bring out a child’s personality during a photo shoot?

We play games, dance to music, talk about their favorite things etc… I always look like a clown… and that’s ok 🙂  

What is your favorite session you have ever done?

Hahaha… That is a hard one! I really love everything I do. I feel really blessed to be able to work with so many people, and that makes my job so fun! I also love being creative and thinking outside the box on fashion and hair, so anytime I get to do that, I have a blast! Also, I do love any chance I get to photograph my own kiddos…  

What type of camera do you prefer?

I use a Nikon D800

Do you have any tips for parents taking their own candid photos of their children?

Let candid be candid. Capture them playing or laughing or yawning. Let the kids be kids… They are only little once, so try to just enjoy the silly and goofy pics. Take millions of them!! 

Do you like to use props in your photography? If so, what types are your favorite?

When I first started my business, I was really into props. However, now I am enjoying keeping it simple and letting the kids, the scenery, the clothes and the hair be the focal point of the pic, instead of loosing the child in all the props. 

Do you prefer studio or outdoor shooting?

I love my studio! We remodeled my studio about a year and a half ago, and I just love it! It is the best, however outside is so fun too. If I had to pick, I would do studio for sure!!
