Halloween Mantel

Wan’t a SUPER cheap and easy Halloween mantel idea?  We whipped these scary pictures out fast.  My 4 year old helped me design them.  I don’t know my way around most editing programs, but picmonkey makes it fool proof.  My kids use this program all the time.  Now, I am sounding like a commercial haha.  This is not a sponsored post.  I just love the site!

We used dollar store frames for this project (and I was short one frame so Cooper hasn’t made it up on the mantel yet, but we are working on it!)

To use:

  • Visit picmonkey.com
  • Click on “edit” (top right) and upload your photo.
  • On the far right hand side you will see a row of icons.  Click on the cat.
  • Select which “monster” you want to create, and picmonkey will give you steps on how to create that monster.

Painted Pumpkins

Looking for a fun an easy Halloween craft?  I had a great time with my mom, @drdi  painting pumpkins this week!

We used craft store pumpkins because they are cheap and we can bring them out every year!

This project was inspired by the tutorial on The House that Lars Built blog.

Materials:

  • Fake craft store pumpkins (or real pumpkins if that’s what you prefer)
  • Bulls-eye primer spray paint (we love this primer, it helps the paint go on so easily)  With this primer, you will only need one coat of paint.
  • Sharpie (to draw face details)
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Printable stencils from The House that Lars Built Tutorial (we didn’t use the stencils, but I am sure they would be fantastic).

Directions:

  • Cover the pumpkins with the bulls eye spray paint primer (do this outside).   It takes about 10-15 min to dry.  Then we turn it over and pain the bottom.
  • Paint the pumpkin your desired color.  We mixed paint colors with white to make pastels.
  • Let try (or use a hair dryer.
  • Add face details using a pencil first, then sharpie.   We used paint for lips and cheeks.

Working from Home

Untitled

I thought I would share with you all something that I do (in addition to Taylor Joelle) to earn money from home.  I’ve got a pretty sweet online teaching gig!

I teach English to Chinese students from the comfort of my own home.  The company is called VIPkid, and the headquarters are in Beijing, China. You teach English to kids between the ages of 4-12.  Classes are one-on-one and conducted online through the VIPKID portal. You DO need a bachelors degree to apply, but a teaching certificate is NOT required.

Here’s my feedback:

Pros

  • Working from home
  • Lessons are already prepared for me
  • Pay is great (about $20 per hour)
  • Very little (if any) prep work
  • I set my own hours and can work as little or as much as I want
  • The kids are adorable!!

Cons

  • Early teaching hours (you need to be in Beijing time).  Although this really is my only option since I have little ones at home. I guess it’s considered a pro as well.   I usually teach from about 5-7:30am and then sometimes on weekend evenings.
  • Interview process is a little rigorous (lots of busy work).  However, I finished the process pretty quickly.  I applied and was teaching less than a week after I applied.

Questions?

Feel free to comment with any questions.  I’d love to help you through the process.

Circus Circus

We had a ton of fun with our circus shoot!  Thanks Heather Telford for the awesome pictures!

For the dumb bells I bought a wooden craft rod and 2 Styrofoam balls at my local craft store.  My husband cut the rod to where I wanted it, then I made a little hole in each ball, and filled it with hot glue.  I then stuck each end of the rod into each balls and held it until the glue dried.  Then, I spray painted away!

For the circus stand, I simply took a big flower pot we had on hand, and spray painted it.  Easy peasy.

Here’s a few more sneak peaks of our shoot.  Skirts are available now on Taylor Joelle .  Striped leo and dress are coming July!
