Q&A – Getting to Know The Designer

She inspires you with her fashion and helps you dress your children in style. Have you ever wondered about the person behind the clothes? How did she get started? What inspires her?  It’s time to get to know our owner and designer, Jenny!

A little about Jenny:
I am a mother of 4 beautiful kids, and a wife to Jason (who is also part owner in Taylor Joelle).  I love to read, run, and create beautiful things.

How did Taylor Joelle Designs get started and what does the brand stand for?
I use to be a teacher, but after having my first child, I wanted to stay home.  I was anxious to do something from home, and a little obsessed with baby things, so I decided to start a brand named after my first daughter, Taylor Joelle.  We started with 1 item (a crib bedding set) and steadily grew from there.  I love everything about my job, it is so much for to create products that I am excited about. We strive to produce qualityboutique style, unique, items for babies and children.
Who do you design for?
We are designing for mom’s who care about fashion and want to have a fresh, fun look for their little ones.
What made you want to start your own clothing line?
A passion for babies and children’s clothing.  I have way more fun shopping for my kids than I do for myself.
Where do you get your fashion inspiration?
I love project runway, and subscribe to In Style Magazine.  I want to take adult fashion trends, and use that in kids fashion.
What children’s clothing brands do you admire and why?
I am obsessed with jcrew.  I love shopping for my little ones there.  I also enjoy nextdirect, gap,  and zara,.  I love how these brands steer away from cutesy baby prints and graphics, and focus more on fashion.
What trends are you seeing for Spring/Summer 2012?
I am seeing a lot of color blocking.  I also love the nautical look with the navy and red.  Another thing that is hot right now is polka dots.  I want to work polka dots into our fall 2012 line.

What advice would you give to parents shopping for their children?
My advice would be to try and be unique.  Rather than dressing them in cute “baby stuff”, try and dress your little guy like a little man.  Follow the fashion trends for your little girl.  Also, you don’t need to be all matchy matchy.  It is fun to mix and match prints.  Have your little gal wear a pair of striped leggings with a floral dress.  Our kids can get away with a lot more than we can when it comes to fashion.
